World of Warcraft

No sequel for WoW... yet

Posted Sep 17, 2008 by Kody

videogamer.com recently sat down with Frank Pearce, Blizzard's executive vice-president of product development for an interview where he dashed the hopes of World of Warcraft 2.

Pearce clearly stated that Blizzard is currently more interested in expanding World of Warcraft -- going as far as confirming that the company hasn't even begun to think about the design of a sequel for the game.

"We haven't even started to think about a sequel," he said. "The team still has a huge wishlist of exciting features to add on top of what's already been implemented since launch. Not to mention, we're all still playing the game pretty heavily ourselves, and there's a lot more content that we want to see as players."

With 9.3 million subscribers happily supporting the game, there's really no good reason to consider focusing development on another product in the same franchise -- not to mention the same genre. Another disappointment for those looking for dates -- Pearce quickly shot down any chance of prying a release date for Wrath of the Lich King out of the dark recesses of his mind.

Head over to the Frank Pearce interview to read more; they'll also have StarCraft II, Diablo III (yes, you heard it right) and Starcraft: Ghost on Monday.

I wouldn't really expect a sequel for WoW. Maybe an upgrade, similar to what Eve has done. Instead of a completely new game, just overhaul the current one. I don't mean a patch or an expansion, but a serious overhaul like completely new graphics engine, etc.

I mean, what would you do in WoW 2? Would it be a different time period? I can't really think of anything actually involving WoW that couldn't just be included in an expansion or something...

I want to know who these handful of people asking "World of Warcraft 2! COMMENT?! A DEFINATE!?" To be disappointed that much that their hopes were dashed... They have an expansion coming out for WoW, SC2, and Diablo 3... Rate me down if you want, for calling it a dumb question.

They could just do a graphics over haul and some huge patch. Which could change things all they really need to do. Hey come check me out at Stormreaver my name is Dethless.

There are actually quite a few people clamoring for a sequel to the game. Why? I don't know -- it's just one of those things you always see in the gaming industry. With so many players there are bound to be those that have grown bored with the game but would like to experience a new version of it.

i can tell you who expects wow 2.... people who dont even know WoW is part of a series of games (wc 1, 2, 3) and think its a completely new idea, and those are the people who are also complaining about lore like "wtf what is naxx?! who is kel thuzad?!" dont mean ti be rude or offend anybody, but those are who expect wow 2 :p

What Frank Pearce meant was: We`re still milking this loser and extremly gay 5 year old 24 bit engine :) and we pray each day that no other MMO will come and amaze our idiot customers that suck and suck like a whore everything we throw at them :) But thats just my flawed opinion anyway.Just give you`re house keys to blizz and all your money etc etc.

And it would be better for Blizz to pay barely any attention to WoW, stop patches, and then make a game so we can pay for it again?

Personally, UO had the right idea. I think it was Third Age when you could either run the game in 2D or semi 3D. They should just release a WoW patch with some graphics improvements and then give you a choice as to whether to use them or not. Possibly charge for it and then we'll see how much a 5 year old 24 bit engine bothers people.

I play for a while, get bored or burned out, take about a month's break from the game, and come back ready to play again. I think the people that get "bored" so easily are the ones trying to do too much in too little time. Spread it out some, try doing more things instead of focusing on just one thing, experience as much of the game content as possible. Finished all the raid instances? Try PvP. Have a ton of Alliance 70s? Try Horde. You open up a whole new aspect of the game, learn more of the lore, and most importantly, have more fun.

With that said, I don't think I'm ready for a WoW 2 yet. There's so much of WoW left to "discover". As long as there's always something I haven't tried or seen yet, I won't get bored.

I'd have to agree with you completely. The people who can't seem to enjoy the game full are the ones who either focus on 1 character completely, ie: raid 6 days a week on 1 toon or have about a million of them. People who are either TOO focussed or just not focussed enough. This is ofcourse....opinion. The people I see enjoying the game are the people who are taking it easy and just enjoying as many aspects as they can - doing all the quest lines, sucking up the lore, exploring dungeons and heroics, experiencing some raid content in either a causal or even hardcore basis, but basically those that take the time to concentrate on more than getting uber lootz or having 5 characters on every server.

I also agree that I'm not ready, nor wanting for a WoW 2. I'd rather they just develop and keep evolving WoW. If I had to leave my 3 70s behind (and my growing little ones) I think I'd not bother with mmorpgs anymore. You put time and energy into playing, just like the devs put their time and energy into creating - and to just drop it all for something else isn't my idea of what I want my gaming experience to be. It's like they spend time and energy for money, we spend money, time and energy for fun - but if something ELSE comes, what we did/had is wasted/gone to some extent.
If there were to be any 'sequels' I'd hope that we were able to port our characters to it at the very least. Otherwise, no thanks.
